The Rascals continued their skid Saturday in a home-and-home doubleheader with the crosstown-rival Gateway Grizzlies, complete with a pair of losses both in Sauget, IL, and O’Fallon, MO.
The afternoon contest at GCS Ballpark was a pitcher’s duel from start to finish; both pitching staffs two-hit each other’s lineups. However, the Grizzlies pulled ahead in the third when Matt Mirabal homered to take a 1-0 lead, and crept ahead in the seventh when Antone DeJesus was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to finish off game one 2-0.
The night contest was far more interesting back at TR Hughes Ballpark. Gateway got going quickly when cleanup hitter Landon Hernandez belted a solo home run to lead off the second inning to pull ahead 1-0. However, this time, the Rascals battled back in the fifth with their first runs of the doubleheader. Scott Dalrymple led off the inning with a solid double, and moved to third on a sac bunt by Steve Carrillo. Eric Williams followed with a single, and with runners on the corners, Manager Steve Brook put on a successful suicide squeeze, scoring Dalrymple and trying the game at one. Jake Atwell immediately followed with an RBI single to give River City at 2-1 advantage.
But Gateway found its way back into the game in the eighth inning. Jonathan Johnson singled to lead off and Antone DeJesus drew a walk. Gabe Shaw entered in relief of Brett Harman, making only his second career start for River City, and walked Jose Flores. With the bases loaded, Hernandez picked up his second and third RBI of the evening on a single that brought home Johnson and DeJesus. With the lead set a 3-2, Gateway notched their insurance run in the ninth when Jon Meyeres sent a homer over the left field wall.
The Rascals skid continued, and the team has now lost 10 of its last 11 games after starting an impressive 0-7. They look to avoid the sweep Sunday at 6:05 in O’Fallon. For tickets, fans can call (636)240-BATS, or visit www.RiverCityRascals.com.
