The Francis Howell Vikings had their first scare of the postseason yesterday afternoon when they took on the Saint Louis University High Jr. Billikens.
The Jr. Bills held the Vikings scoreless until the 4th innning. The Vikings were down 2-0, until senior Calvin Munson, the hero from the last two games for the Vikings, hit a clutch 2-run home run to tie the game. This sparked Francis Howell.

After a scoreless 5th inning for both teams, Howell answered the call with 2 big runs in the top of the 6th inning. Senior Nate Green knocked in junior Nic Perkins to put Howell up 3-2. The Vikings added another run in the 6th after a wild pitch. Freshman Ryan Perkins scored the run to make the lead 4-2 for Howell.
The Jr. Bills couldn’t answer back in the 6th or 7th and Francis Howell won the game 4-2.
Donnie Lovelady picked up the win after coming in for Austin Southmayd. Lovelady pitched a little over 4 innings, he gave up 0 runs on 2 hits. Vikings ace Calvin Munson took the hill in the 7th inning to close out the game and pick up the save.
Munson has been on fire in the playoffs. He has not only been dominant on the mound, but he is making a difference at the plate as well. His big 2-run home run tied the game in the 4th and gave the Vikings a spark of life.
SLUH finished the season with an overall 23-6 record. They gave Howell a good fight and before Munson’s home run, it seemed like the Jr. Bills had the game under control.
Francis Howell advances to the state semifinals where they will face Staley. The game will be Friday, May 31st at 7:00 PM at T.R. Hughes Ballpark, the home of the River City Rascals.
The winner of that game will play the winner of the other semifinal against, Willard and CBC, in the state championship game.
