River City stopped their 3-game skid on Tuesday, topping the last-place Rockford Aviators 3-1 at TR Hughes Ballpark in O’Fallon.
Rockford got on the board first, drawing blood in the top of the third innings. Eric Bainer drew a leadoff walk off Rascals starter Tommy Mendoza, reached second on a bunt, and came around to score when second baseman Will Block misplayed a grounder, allowing Bainer to score from second.
But River City bounced back quickly. In the bottom of the fourth, Evan Crawford launched a double into the gap and moved to third when Phil Wunderlich lofted a sacrifice fly. Jake Atwell followed with a sac fly of his own, bringing in Crawford to make it 1-1.
Following the tying run, the game stayed scoreless until the home half of the eighth. After stranding runners in scoring position the previous two innings, the Rascals broke through when Curran Redal and Evan Crawford led off with a pair of walks. Wunderlich laced an RBI single for the go-ahead run, and Atwell again lofted a sac fly, his second, to score Crawford for the insurance run.
Nick Kennedy earned the win in relief, piggybacking off an excellent start by Tommy Mendoza. Gabe Shaw entered in the ninth and notched the save.
The Rascals continue their homestand with the Rockford Aviators Wednesday evening at 7:05pm. For tickets, fans can call (636)240-BATS, or visit www.RiverCityRascals.com.
